Reading Music: Taking the Mystery out of Reading Notes 2
This is Lesson 2 on Reading Music. Homework Assignment: 1) Copy Guido's picture on a piece of paper. [This gets zillions more brain neurons involved. It helps comprehension and retention.] 2) PLAY it three times every day WHILE following your own sketch, until you can play it quickly. Do not play by memorization. Do NOT think about the names of the notes even if you know them. Both defeat our purpose. The goal is to be able to choose any star on Guido's picture and play the piano key that corresponds to it. I go directly from paper to piano. That's why I'm a good sightreader. I have long known that many have a fear of learning to read music. Often the excuse for not learning is "I'm too lazy" or "I have no time". Unless you can play by ear, not reading is impractical if you want to play the piano. Yes, piano scores can look intimidating. But if you understand the logic behind it, learning becomes simple and you will be able to play almost any piece if you PRACTICE. Thus this fictional series of stories to make learning fun.
