what is the best way to learn to read note music?

Raelynn asked:

okay so i'm 13 and attempting to teach myself guitar, so i'd like to know how to read music (i know it's possible to plan an instrument without reading note music, but i think it would just be easier if i could).

i know the difference between a whole note and a half note (ect.), and that's about it. i'd like to learn to read note music well, and quickly, what would you suggest?
i've already tried flashcards and that was no help whatsoever, so are there any (specific) books or just methods in general that you'd recommend?
oh and i've also heard that the best way is to "learn by doing", is this true?

How to read music for piano? HELP! please *10 pts*?

i have a ? asked:

Ok so I am a beginner pianist.. I never took any lessons, but so many great artists inspire me to play music. My goal in piano is just to have fun and play songs I enjoy everyday. Though my problem is I am having a problem reading music. I know the spaces and lines for the treble cleff, not so much the bass clef. But even knowing just the right hand notes I am having difficulty. Like when I try to play a simple song, my mind blanks out, and that discourages me because I feel like I will never be able to learn how to play the instrument I love most. I am 15 years old by the way, and I do want the suggestion saying to get a piano teacher, I cant afford the money, and even so I am trying to just learn basics. I need to feel more confident about trying to continue with this beautiful instrument. So are there any tips that helped you learn to read music? Can you give me techniques you used. Reading music is my main priority right now, then hopefully after that step I will try to practice playing music by ear. But as of now I really need some encouragement... Also how long did it take you guys to learn to read music (meaning how many hours a day did you practice reading, and how many days did that last?). PLEASE help, thanks I really appreciate it =)
