Is it hard to learn the drums? Do you have to know how to read music?

I've never played a insturment before (unless you count the recorder) and I can not read music at all. I just plain out can't read sheet music and I dont even know any of the notes. But I want my uncle to teach me to play the drums.
My friend is starting a band. Since I've always wanted to play drums I thought if I learned now I could try out for her band. Would I not be able to join a band if I can't read music? And is it hard to learn the drums?
