Drum circles are a traditional way to celebrate, mourn, heal, and meditate, and they have been around for thousands of years. Over the past few years, we've been seeing people gathering in drum circles at festivals and for other celebrations. Drum circles are also often held as workshops where people of all ages can join in with different drums and percussion and learn what it is like to connect with the rhythm.

Anthropology tells us that the earliest native peoples got together to make music and to share stories and celebrate. In addition, drumming functioned as a way for communities to communicate with each other. Native cultures across the globe still embrace drumming.

Drum circles are a tranquil activity in which to take part, and players commonly enter a state of deep contemplation. The way the base tones vibrate can feel like a heartbeat and invite you to relax and release stress. Drumming might be thought of as exuding a lot of energy, but that all depends on the energy of the group that is doing the playing. Drum circles focus on all types of people and many groups cater to senior citizens and children. When the groups meet, they play music which also soothes them and they enjoy each other's company, too. Those who have difficulty manipulating a drum can participate using other types of noise makers like shakers, claves or guiro.

Also drum circles can be used to heal. Drumming is good therapy for helping persons who have communication problems with spoken words, including autistic children and children who find it difficult to talk. Everyone is equal and has a voice when drumming.

Drum circles also create a sense of community. Just by virtue of how they function, people are brought together to share dancing, singing, and playing. When the drums are played well, it is like they are having a conversation with each other and saying lots of different things. This low toned recurring pulse conjures feelings of security and stability while accents of high tones add contrast.

Playing in a group can help you improve as a percussionist, as well. As you drum with other people, it is easy to forget that you have to listen to what's going on. Some players pound away without any concern for other players. Be sure to listen for changes in order to adjust your playing to keep with the evolving feel that occurs in a drum circle. With practice, you may also find yourself leading and directing the movement of the drum circle, changing the tempo and the rhythm.
