what is the course-load for a music business major?

5dfggf4f asked:

I was looking at Fredonia's music business program and found this:

http://www.fredonia.edu/som/musicbusiness.htm

I also found something that said I needed to have some musical ability, be able to read music, and I will have to take music and instrumental classes. Is anyone here a music marketing/merchandising/business major and able to tell me what I need to take? I can't really play any instrument and don't know how to read music.

What is your opinon about getting a degree in Music and English Literature?

Jesse asked:

i am interested in these two things. Though, I'm fully aware that it's gambling.

I'm wondering what your opinion is about getting degrees in these two areas?
(I'm very in touch with music, i've been playing the piano for 9 years, so I know how to read music and do all that kinds of stuff. For the piano.)

Berklee College of Music?

Dr. Murphy asked:

Ok, let me start with a little background info:
I am a freshman in hich school and I'm looking to pursue a degree in music after I graduate. I play Guitar, Bass, Clarinet and some Piano. I really want to get a degree in Music Performance for Guitar, and I'd like it to be from Berklee cause it looks like the best suite for me (I researched several music programs around the U.S.). I play a lot of Blues and Metal on my guitar and I'm also profecient in Jazz. My soloing is my strong suite but I also know a great deal about rhythms and chords. I can read music decently (pretty bad at sight reading), but my strength is playing by ear which according to my band teacher I am extremely good at. I know quite a bit about music theory in general, and I am a very fast learner. Finally, my GPA is a 4.0, which I know isn't overly important in applying for a music college, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Now my question:
What should I work on to improve my chances of getting into Berklee? I'd like to know what I should do to 1. Get accepted to Berklee? 2. Get a scholarship? 3. Get a presidential scholarship? (Only 7 musicians in the applying class get this so I am not putting a lot of hopes into getting one)

For specifics:
What Skills should I have?
What Scales should I know?
What Songs should I work on?

I thank you for your time and your help! :)

Is it possible to get into a good music school without classical training?

Jackson asked:

I have been playing piano by ear since i can remember and writing songs before even then. I am a junior in high school and just started learning how to read music. Is it possible to get into a good music school without having the classical training all those stuck up rich kids claim you need? Or will shear talent, hard work, and heart be enough?

Should I quit music college?

Ben Jones asked:

Hi,

I am currently on my second year of my N.D Pop at Leeds College of Music and I'm thinking of quitting.

This is because I cannot seem to make any friends at college (maybe because I'm older than most of the people on my course) and most people I talk to are not friends are don't care about me. I also don't think I'm good enough to carry it on.

I see so many younger people who are very talented, some are absolute whizz kids on guitar, and who have been playing a lot less time than me and who have already reached a higher standard than me. I think to myself that they are naturally talented and that's why they pick it up so quickly, and that clearly, I am not, and that's why I'm struggling to improve.

I am currently becoming very depressed in my current ensemble because I just feel like I am working hard and nobody is appreciating it. I've turned up to every practice, I've learnt the songs first and taught them to everyone else, and who gets the credit? The other guitarist, who sits and shreds all day.

When were composing our first composition as a band, who came up with the main riff? Who came up with most of the chord progression? Yes, me. Yet somehow, the other guitar player gets all the credit.

But I also find myself green with envy because of how good he is, and how the rest of the band champions him on. I pretend to be part of it, but deep inside I am really upset and jealous.

I wish I could be as good as him, and he's five years younger than me! I have been trying hard for five years, and my skills aren't as good as his. Fair enough, my chord knowledge, and theory is better, and so is my knowledge of styles and my sight reading, but of course this doesn't make a great guitarist. He just plays so fast and fluently, and he is accomplished at advanced techniques that I can't quite perform with such fidelity as him. I just wish I didn't have big clumsy fingers that are slow.

I've never had any compliments for my guitar playing, nor has anyone ever said anything good about me at college. The only compliments and encouragement I get are from my lovely girlfriend, she has always supported me, but obviously she says that stuff because I'm her boyfriend. I need to really hear these things from someone who isn't a friend or relative.

I just feel like quitting. The idea keeps running through my head and the more I think about it the more it seems logical, but part of me wonders if I'd be making a big mistake? I worked for two years to save up and pay for the course, would I be throwing it away?

I'm thinking about just working the remainder of the year and applying as a mature student for an English course, at least I know I could get a good job with that.

Any help would be appreciated. :(
