How to Read Music Fast All You Need to Learn How to Read Music Fast and Easy

Why do I get a burning feeling when I listen to certain music? (Read the whole thing, please.)?

onanewdirection asked:

I am 90% sure that I have a stomach ulcer. I even got tested with baruim at the hospital, but they haven't called yet, so I don't know for the extra 10%. Anyway, the problem I have is that when I listen to music that would normally give me goosflesh, and a stirred emotional feeling that's nice and exciting, I am treated to a wonderful burning sensation that goes up my stomach, and sometimes if it's really goosflesh worthy, up my back. Do you think this is caused by an ulcer, or some bizarre mental thing? I would really appreciate a good answer... Thanks in advance, Alex

I’ve never heard of anything like that. May I make a wild guess? You have excess stomach acid (which is also the cause of your ulcer) and when you have that emotional response, it causes your stomach muscles to contract, reflexively. That pushes the acid up into your esophagus, giving you the burning feeling. Do you get heartburn any other time? Or does this only happen with certain music? Did you mention it to your doctor? If not, I think you should. Hope you feel better soon.

No, that’s not your ulcer acting up. Listening to music that gives you “goosflesh” is stirring your emotions and is therefore mental. The senses (sight, sound, smell…) can be extremely powerful and trigger certain good (or bad) feelings in us. If you have a memory with a certain song, listening to it can make you feel exactly the way you did when you listened to it during a certain phase in your life. Same with smelling a certain perfume, etc. It can be so powerful that we can actually get physical reactions. A good example is that when I was pregnant, I wore a certain perfume for the first couple of months…and that’s when I had morning sickness. It’s been four years since and not only can I not wear that perfume anymore, if anyone around me is wearing it, I can smell it from a mile away and it actually brings back the feeling of morning sickness. I actually feel like throwing up smelling this very nice perfume!! All my friends know this and they never wear it around me anymore! So to better answer your question, what the song is doing is triggering your emotions (which are controlled by your brain), so in and of itself it is not physical (as in, related to your stomach). However, if the feeling is really strong, it is very possible to get a physical reaction from it as I just explained with my story. Regardless, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. I don’t think your ulcer can flair up from something like this. Like you said, it’s a “good” feeling and it probably does you more good than harm. I hope my answer makes sense! To sum it up, it’s not caused by your ulcer, it’s caused mentally, but if it’s a really strong reaction, you may feel it in your stomach. And btw, you’d feel it in your stomach regardless of having an ulcer. I get the same sensation and I don’t have ulcers. Good luck with your ulcer by the way if it turns out you do have it.
