How do I learn to read music and play guitar? NO TABS!
Crazy Buddha asked:
I took guitar lessons in high school for about a year. That was over a decade ago and I have no residual guitar skills whatsoever. I have no idea how to read music, but am fascinated by it. I'm VERY good at learning conceptual things by reading books, so if you could recommend a book/website that teaches basic guitar and basic music reading together, that would be great. Alternatively, I could use a website/book that teaches how to read music, and a separate website/book that teaches basic guitar skills. I plan to learn a few basic basic songs/scales then take some lessons.

Head to Barnes & Noble and pick up Teach Yourself Visually Guitar. I stumbled upon that book a few years ago to get myself started before taking lessons, and I loved it! If you’re a visual learner you’ll benefit greatly from all the pictures, diagrams, and simple to the point directions. You won’t need a seperate book since everything you need to know and more (ie. how to play different music styles) is covered in Teach Yourself Visually Guitar. It’s the best guitar instructional book I’ve come across.

And those idiots didn’t teach you how to read music?! Say hi to them and claim your money back!
About reading sheet music, I can give you a link to a same question and you can read my answer (it includes a web link as well).
There’s not much science about it, you’ll learn it quickly. I guess you know the basics of playing (at least some chords), so just keep learning. If you have any particular questions, then ask.
Good luck.

HIRE A TEACHER… that will be the quickest and it will save you loads of time in learning. Not only will you find the quickest way to read music, you will also learn the BASICS of playing the guitar… something most of these children on here seem to think is not important. Reading music and a good grounding in the basics will give you YEARS of pleasure.
There are books on basic music theory and learning how to read music is NOT THAT HARD… I don’t know why these people insist on learning TABS when learning music for a guitar is so easy… it’s mostly Treble Staff stuff.

The best book I’ve come across is called Solo Guitar by Frederick Noad. The songs are classical, but the book starts off very simple, teaching you how to read basic notes and progresses to very complicated pieces.
