How to Read Music Fast All You Need to Learn How to Read Music Fast and Easy

What is really perfect pitch and relative pitch? What do I have?

Roger asked:

I have loved classical music since 2 years ago. It first happened when I amazingly saw fast hands of that pianist playing flight of the bumblebee.. But somehow I had my interpretation while hearing it. Then I discovered a lot of classical music and so on.

I also learned to play piano after that event. And learn some music theory by my own. And by the way, I just actually learned piano by myself and some extensive research made it possible for me to read music. And discovering new classical pieces, it seemed to me I knew the key signature of the piece because I base the tonality of the new piece I heard from previous pieces I knew, because they have the same tones., like that. It also seems I got used to know the pitches in the piano as I have played them and notice them everyday. I know all the pitches. But I'm not clearly sure if this is a sign of having a kind of talent.

So my question is, as asked above too, how do I determine whether I have these kind of pitches.

Have a friend play completely random pitches on the piano that are completely out context of any tonality. If you can get them all immediately without thinking about it, then you have perfect pitch, if not, then you don’t. You can be talented without perfect pitch though, and you can have perfect pitch without much talent, so don’t sweat it.

^i agree with above, although from what i can understand you do not have perfect pitch, but just have good listening skills. I would advise going to a professional who can sharpen up these skills, which you have only had for 2 years (therefore raw talent) and turn it into huge talent. i think perfect pitch can be learnt in some people, yet again i would recomend going to a teacher who can not teach you a specific instrument, but generally teach you music, in terms of correct terms, theory and listening practice. Maybe try composing, it helps to have good hearing, creativity and theory knowledge.

Relative pitch is being able to recognize an interval. m2 M2 P4 etc. Perfect pitch is being able to name any note heard.

Knowing three people at my college who have perfect pitch I would definitely say you could possibly have perfect pitch or relative pitch to say the least. You should definitely take the advice of the first person who answered and have a friend play random pitches both high and low and then you guess them. While having perfect pitch is very helpful it can only take you so far. It is up to you to use this gift to better yourself and your playing abilities. Good luck!
