Learning to play the Piano, re-learning to read music.help?
Um, Hi.
*Incoming walls of text, so if its TL;DR (Too long, Didnt Read) just skip to the bottom and read the **** **** part*
Right now, im in the 11th grade, and want to secretly learn how to piano so I can randomly surprise my parenst by playing a piano whenever we come across one. It would be funny (to me) and would be a shocker to them, which would make all of this worthwhile. However...
In the 6th and 7th grade I used to play the Cello, But i got out of orchestra in the 8th grade because I just got tired of my Orchestra teachers Pessimistic attitude/personality. (She was a real downer, all the time). And i can honestly say, Getting out of Orchestra is something I can add to my list of regrets. Playing an instrument was really fun, and I loved the Cello, and I was always 1st or 2nd Chair on the Cello side of the orchestra room. (She had this tier system where the best players would be closer to 1st chair, and the worst players would be around 8th chair, so me being 2nd chair meant I was the 2nd best cello player. Get it?)
But now, since its been 5-6 years since I've played an instrument, I forgot how to read music.
and im trying to learn the piano through online guides, tutorials, and pretty much anything useful online, printing it out, and practicing it on an electric keyboard my sister left after she went to college. However, Im having trouble reading music.
Im pretty sure if I briefly re-learned how to play the Cello (which will/should be easy, since I still remember some basic stuff. [Theres a "Jam" club at my school where, during club days, during that specific club Period, you just "Jam" on instruments you know how to play, however, you're only allowed to join if you know how to play. As in, you can't join just to learn how to play an instrument, So my former Cello experience would be my way in]) I'll be able to pick up how to read music on a Piano.
so...
****
Tl;DR..
Should I learn how to play the Piano,an instrument I have no experience on, by relearning how to play the Cello, an instrument where, I have 2 years of experience..5-6 years ago?
OR
should I just STUDY, STUDY, STUDY, STUDY, STUDY until I have piano notes, and music notes, and etc memorized?
---- I'm not sure if that's the best choice since in order to learn an instrument, you kinda have to have a mentor/teacher who will guide you through hands-on, trial-and-error.
--------------But that's not an option since I want to surprise my parents with my newfound piano ability.

how to read music
You cannot just memorize playing the piano – it takes considerable muscle memory.
I could never play both hands at once and was very frustrated.
However, I learned trumpet and love it. and still do.
I would buy a cheap electric keyboard to practice on.
——
Let me rephrase this. Assume you study like crazy and you then you play in front of your parents without having touched a keyboard. You will fall down on your face – guarranteed

that is untrue actually.
You can memorize the piano, if you learn by ear.
I have been playing the piano sense i was four, and have come to a very high level of playing.
I have absolutly no idea how to read notes.
I know this sounds hard, but if you listen to a song and teach yourself to play exactly what you ear, eventually, you can learn to play what you want to.
It just takes hours of practice and LOTS of patience.

I recommend using the software at at the very least you will have all of the basics covered via their 3 step learning process that presents information in a sequential order. You also get quizzes with ear training and very cool play alongs. Individual users are loving this program all over the world and now schools and large ensemble groups are beginning to adopt it for their students and members. Check out the Kore Series at – it is available for 39 instruments including piano and guitar.

how to read music
Go for piano; reading music will come back to you quickly. You must find a piano you can practice on or your fingers will not be prepared.

I’m not gonna think about this too much…when one learns to read to begin with, he never forgets.
