How long play gutair, acoustic?

Bob Smith asked:

let's see, I learned how to play the piano and the clarienet, so I know how to read music and such so I can skip that part. but what I'm asking is how long would you think It will take for me to learn how to play gutair? don't answer "depends on you" cause I've learned instruments before pretty fast, both of the ones I mentioned took less than a month each. and I'd be dedicated because honestly, what chick doesn't like a guy who can play gutair, and I wantto write music for the songs I write whenever something bad happens to me, therefore it would be acoustic one, don't know which type of gutair is harder to learn.

  1. Music Reading

Acoustic guitar builds hand strength faster than electric.
And it does depend on you.
If you are as dedicated as you were to the other instruments you can play basic stuff in a month or so.
But guitar is extremely difficult to master.
There are many different styles and techniques.
I’m 10 years in and Still have lots of room to improve.

OK, I won’t answer “Depends on You” because it actually depends on leprechauns who come to visit you in the night. If they like you, it only takes a few hours. If they hate you…. you wind up playing a Uke and it takes a year.

Seriously dude – what or who do you think it depends on.. How fast you learn how to play depends on how much time YOU (not me, not somebody else) puts in. Nobody masters any instrument in a month – especially the piano, so please don’t insult our intelligence with that nonsense. Otherwise I’d expect to see your name in lights on Carnegie Hall for an upcoming virtuoso Piano recital, and they ain’t there.

If what you mean by “playing” is strumming a few chords to impress your girlfriend… that’s a week if you’re as smart as you say you are, your fingers hold up and the calluses come quickly for you. I’d allow most beginning students a month or two to get there, but since you already play some piano and read music, it shouldn’t take you quite as long.

If what you mean by “playing” is being able to get around the fingerboard, play both open and barre chords (so you can play in Bb Eb and other oddball keys) and maybe play a little “lead” or do on-the-fly guitar transcriptions from your piano sheet music.. read the chord, play a bass note and the melody, maybe some finger-picking… That’s 6-12 months if you’re serious.

If what you mean by “playing” acoustic guitar is Doyle Dykes – that takes a lifetime and most people never even come close no matter how much they practice.

The good news – there is a ton of instructional guitar stuff on YouTube for free. I say grab a guitar and get started. Just make sure it’s set up properly (strings low enough to play easily and it plays in-tune). Good luck.
