How to Read Music Fast All You Need to Learn How to Read Music Fast and Easy

How fast should I be playing piano?

Cody asked:

I kinda know how to read sheet music, I know all the notes and everything anyway. What I have trouble with is the speed at which I play. How do I know how fast to play a song? I know it gives the 4/4 or 4/3 or whatever number is at the beginning of the sheet, but I don't really know how to put that into a speed.

If anyone could help me out that would be great thanks!

  1. Caffeinated Content

usually it has the tempo of the song at the top of the sheets, buy a metronome and you can set it to that speed and also the time signature (4/4 – 4/3)
you get them on keyboards most of the time

The 4/4 and 4/3 are not a speed mark. They are the time signatures, which show how many beats in a measure, (top number) and what the beat is equal to (4 being quarter note, 3 being dotted quarter, etc.) The speed is either a word at the beginning, like fast, slow, andante, allegretto, or it would be left out, in which case it is up to your musical discretion and the feel of the song. Every song is different.
