Alex asked:

how much can i improve my guitar playing if i practice 6 hrs a day for the next 2 months??
i started playing electric guitar 5-6 months ago. right now i practice about 2 hrs a day every day. ive been told im improving very fast. within 3 months i could play the first half to sweet child of mine by guns n roses as well as wish you were here (pink floyd), knights of cydonia (muse) (solo included, but this is the only solo i know how to play), stairway to heaven intro, and a few other easier songs. my finger strength and dexterity is aslo very good so far. i do various finger exercises especially for my pinky. the only thing i really need to improve alot on is reading music and stuff :( anyway my question is i want to know how much i could learn/improve if i practice 6 hrs a day for thhe next 2 months??? enough to solo maybe?? i only ask b/c i will be starting college in 2 months and i know once i start school, i wont have nearly as much time to practice. so i want to learn as much as i can now while i still have alot of time to practice

  1. Learning to Read Music

I think everyone has a limit to the amount of effective learning time they can put in. Even if you love and enjoy it, some times pushing it will do the opposite of what you want. From observation, one thing that makes people take a big leap in skill is playing live. Even if you’re not great, get together with a group of some sort and play. expand in different ways. Play other types of music, etc. Some times skill is a little piece of the puzzle. Style can be harder to acquire.

I guess you did not get an answer that you wanted when you ask before.
I really would not expect great improvement. 2 hours a day should give you all you can handle. Anything beyond that is only building endurance.
You are going to college in 2 months. Enjoy life. Don’t spend it all on the guitar.
I hope you will apply yourself as much to your education as you have to the guitar.

  3. Learn How to Read Music Notes

Depends on what you are practicing. Are you challenging yourself? Playing new things that are difficult and need to be worked on? Or are you just playing things you know well? Keep a practice diary so you can look back each week and see if you’ve made progress. Most people can’t concentrate for 6 hours straight. If you really want to practice that much, break it up over the day. A focused hour is better than 6 hours of random noodling. Make a schedule to you can keep track of what you’re doing. For example: 30 minutes warm up, 30 minutes note reading, break for 15, 30 minutes jamming and creating.

Always use a metronome. Really. Yeah, I know, everyone hates it, but that’s because it’s hard. You need to train your inner clock as much as your finger. Play with other people. There are things you’ll learn playing with others that you can never learn on your own.

Note reading is a very incremental process. Start with very simple melodies and rhythms. Use that metronome! Don’t let yourself slide and brush off little mistakes. They can turn into habits. And remember this saying: The amateur practices until he gets it right. The professional practices until he never gets it wrong.

On top of all that, have fun! If it turns into a hassle and a grind you’ll lose interest and give up. If you just want to play a few songs, then do that.
