Playing without reading is like speaking a language without being able to read it. Sure you might be able to pick up a good conversation, but you’d always feel weird not being able to communicate with fellow musicians.
I’m self-taught, I can play guitar pretty well, and I have even “written” my own original songs… but I can’t read music, and that pains me. I learned by playing in cover bands, then graduating to writing songs based on stuff I liked.
I always tell people: “I can PLAY the guitar… I just don’t know HOW to play the guitar!”
When first learning to play, learning to read notation may be off-putting. An alternative is guitar tablature, which displays the fret to be played rather than the note to be played.
Although to become an accomplished guitarist, eventually you will have to learn proper music theory and notation.
Im a pianist .. and I think learning to read music is very essential playing an instrument. it also will teach you correct fingering to maneuver around your guitar.. So learn to read.. in the long run it will save time on learning songs you love.. I played ear first.. now I read so its even better..
Absolutely not. There are many famous musicians that taught themselves to play guitar without being able to read a note of music. However, it might make it a little easier if you would get a book of the chords and practice from there.
Some of the best musicians around can’t read music… I guess it’s because they just have an ear for it. You can always learn the chords by reading tabs though.
It depends what you what to play and by how are you going to learned. Because you can learned it from somebody by just looking or learned how to read noted in guitar lessons.
To learn any musical instrument, the thing you need most is a strong desire to play music!
that said, I’d advise you to use guitar tabs.
There’s two well known kinds of written music for the guitar – sheet music and guitar tablature. Sheet music is the formal, official kind that most other musicians and composers use. Guitar tablature is a written notation used just for guitarists.
Guitar tablature only takes a few seconds to learn, and will teach you the notes and chords, and most of the different ways to hit a note (like hammer-on) that you’ll need to know. It also advises you on the best finger positioning to use for any particular scenario.
Short of using guitar tablature, the only way you’re going to learn chords or advanced techniques quickly would be to have someone teach you lessons.
it is not neccesary to know how to read music. there is a form of music called tablature that can be found on many web sites and you can play the song by yourself here is an example
the numbers represent the fret that you play.
the letters on the left represent the strings.
and the dashes represent the rests in between each of the stokes on the strings.

Most natural musicians I know just ‘picked it up’. Makes you want to break their fingers, doesn’t it.
But if you aren’t a natural, try tabluture. That’s what I have to use as I am not a natural, nor do I read music. Tablature is pretty easy.
