I’m 17 and want to learn piano?

jsw1188 asked:

I want to start learning piano, sheet music?
I have really good finger dexterity/hand eye coordination/reflexes from playing rhythm games over the years, so my friend (who's been playing piano for years) suggested that I try piano.

I'll have plenty of free time soon, so I hope 17 isn't too late of an age to start.

My main questions are:

How long would it take to play at this level?

Is reading sheet music necessary for a beginner? I wouldn't be against it, but it just seems really complicated.

And finally, is it recommended to take lessons? I'd prefer to just learn on my own free time, but I want to learn the fastest way possible.

  1. learn to read music fast

It is recommended to take at least a couple three lessons just so you dont accidentally start a few bad habits that you wont catch by yourself. Also, with a teacher you’ll learn the basics a lot easier than starting from scratch on your own

  2. Learn to Read Music

    No, it’s not too late.
The link doesn’t work, but it depends on how talented you are and perhaps more importantly how hard you are prepared to work at it.
It depends what your aspirations are… classical, jazz, pop.
If you want to be serious about it – yes reading music is essential.
Yes, the best way to start is to take lessons. Later even if you are not taking lessons, it is helpful to have a mentor or someone you can turn to if you have problems.

it’s not late. it’s not necessary for a beginner, BUT you will need to eventually be able to read sheet music. And You could both learn through lessons.

    The link does not work.
Get lessons for the fisrt 6 months then teach yourself.
What sort of music do you want to play ?
Learn to read music; it is necessary. Of course it is complicated but you start off with easy music first.

  6. Music Reading

sheet music-not complicated. go to and download some beginner stuff. just take lessons. it’s okay. i know someone who took lessons when they were sixty. just follow your dreams, i guess.it takes a while to be great, but most things do, right?

Of course! It’s never too late to start, plus you arer pretty young so your fingers are still pretty flexible. which is good. I highly recommend you take lessons unless you want to figure out everything yourself but it’s usually a lot faster to get a teacher who knows the basics. Reading notes is not highly essential if you are a beginner, methods such as Suzuki method only require you hearing the music and basically repeating that, but the unfortunate thing is, once you get to a higher level but you can’t read, then it’s kind of a big proble, So i would start trying to read at least the treble clef (right hand).
    Good luck!

It’s never too late to learn. I am 35 and I took piano lessons last semester in college. You can practice on your own too. Nowadays keyboards are getting much affordable and just go to one of those music stores where you’ll find self teaching books. My nephew taught himself to play piano and electric guitar. I wish I could do the same:)
My dream is to play like my favorite jazz player

  9. learn to read music fast

As everyone else has said, its never too late to learn. I didn’t start playing piano until I was in college, and now I can entertain my family and friends at any holiday get together.
As for learning, an instructor is always a good idea. If you don’t have the time or money, there are some good online resources for learning the basics of the piano. My favorite is Mahalo’s page:

While it won’t teach you how to read music, it is a great place to start for a beginner who wants to learn piano.
Tons of diagrams and visual instruction, absolutely free.
    Good luck and have fun!
