Would you offer me some basic information on how to read music?
Dreamer asked:
Is all written music based on the same system? If you move from one instrument to another, do you re-learn a specific method of writing? I'd love to check out some recommended reading and websites! Thank you! I have little to no musical understanding, but I'm here to start!

The system basically stays the same from instrument to instrument, but sometimes the clef changes.

Learn How to Read Music Notes
I was going to recommend the same site the first answerer did. It’s very straightforward. Music notation is the same for all instruments, but the notes may change depending on the clef being used (the symbol at the very beginning of the staff).

Music Reading
You need to know the basic clefs Treble, Bass, and Alto.
The Key Signatures, What the instrument is pitched in E flat, B flat, etc.
You need to know the notes for each clef the Lines and the Spaces
You need to know the difference between Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm
You definitely need to know how many beats each notes gets… Whole notes get 4, Half notes get 2, Quarter notes get 1, etc.
You also need to know basic times signatures four four, three four, two four, clear time, and the more advanced you get the harder the time signature will get
Check out sites like musicedmagic.com, musiced.about.com and there are numerous other ones to look at for more help.
If you have problems counting to 4 you will have a major problem
