How different is reading violin music from cello music?
xWingedxSilverxWolfx07 asked:
I play the cello and I have bunch of final fantasy/kingdom hearts music. Problem is that they're for violin and not cello. Sadly there wasn't really any game/anime music for cellists =(
And I wans't sure but is it possible to read violin music for cello? Is it possible to play violin music for cello? How? How do you read treble clef for cello when you play the bass clef? Thanks!

Treble Clef is one of the standard cello clefs (Bass, Tenor and Treble). If you don’t know it now, you probably will have to learn it (or at least tenor) at some point if you want to play most standard cello music. It’s probably possible, though maybe not easy, to play as written. I have read that the cellist Emanuel Feuermann was able to play Mendelssohn’s violin concerto at pitch. In treble clef, the lowest line looks like a G but it is actually an E. Every note is two octaves up and two steps down from Bass clef.
If you want the music to be easier for cello then transpose it down. The easiest thing to do is play it an octave (or two) down. If you rewrite the music or have good sight-transposing skills, you can move it down a fifth (along with the key) so the strings on the cello match the violin’s, or you could do something else (e.g. an octave + a fifth or whatever).
As inspiration, here’s a video of someone playing a transcription of a (difficult) piece Paganini wrote for violin on cello.

You can transpose it. The middle C for treble is where the low E is for the bass – one line below the staff, but the way you can transpose is by thinking of the notes as third up. So in treble, if you have a note where middle C would be in the bass, that is an A. It’s always a third up.

The biggest obstacle is the clef differences. Violin uses the treble clef and the cello uses the tenor and bass clefs. In Tenor Clef Middle C is the center line. In Bass Clef Middle C is one ledger line above the staff. In Treble Clef Middle C is one ledger line below the clef. If you can read the different clefs it is really almost the same. Learning to read the different clefs does not take too much practice and you can find online programs to help. musictheory.net is good for practicing.

violin music 1.) is usually in treble clef while cello is in bass or tenor clef (only occasionally on advanced cello repertoire will treble clef be used) 2.) a “G” played on the lowest string of the violin is in a different location than a “G” played on the lowest string of a cello since a violin is based on G while a cello is based on C
