What is good practise on the guitar, for someone who hasent had lessons yet, and can’t read music?
Charlotte asked:
Okay, i really dont know how to play the guitar, but I really want to. I'll get lessons soon, but for now, ive just learned to play a few short tunes...
my question is: what are some practices i can do to get my fingers conditioned and strong, like, to help me get better at the physical part of playing?

Learn How to Read Music Notes
I don’t play the g, but your fingers will need calluses to play. Just pressing down on the strings with the pads of your right hand will be a good exercise.

Learn How to Read Music Notes
Just playing your tunes will help your fingers to get better fit to play the guitar. A little more advanced will be to play some scales, but I think you have to play a little longer to get to that level.

Run some scales. Then when you go to get lessons your teacher will be surprised that you know a few scales.
You don’t need to know how to read music on this site, just TAB:
You’ll figure it out pretty quickly.
Also, when you’re done playing and won’t be playing again for at least a few hours dip your fingertips on your fretting hand in rubbing alcohol, it dries them out and helps you build calluses faster. (Edit: Someone gave me a thumbs down…. google this, it’s true.)

How to Read Music Hub
You don’t really need to know how to read music. I don’t really read music and I’ve been playing for 40 yrs and have played professionally for 32 of them.
What is most important is that you don’t use TABS to learn the guitar.
That method REALLY REALLY sucks. There is no info on timing or note lengths and no clue as to how to play it unless you know the song already. Also you never know why you are playing what you are.
Go to this site:
This has all sorts of lessons and ways to find out what scales and keys are. What chords to play and what scales to use for solos in a certain key.
There are video lessons and all sorts of good stuff
Also go to:
learn the basic chords E A G B C etc..
also learn the Minor chords (Am Bm etc,) m7 and 7th chords.to start with.
then you can learn to play songs using songbooks
example:
that site has tons of songs you can learn using “real” music books rather than crappy Tabs.
That’s how I learned guitar in the late 60′s. About 2 months of lessons, A Mel Bay Chord chart and song books.
it’s still the best way to go.
I can pick out musical notes on a staff, but really have forgotten how to actually read it ( I only read music in 4th grade playing the trumpet) so I have a hard time interpreting sheet music. But it’s not necessary.
Just please learn a little theory, a bunch of chords and a few scales like the major minor, penatatonic and blues scales. That will help you quite alot

Music Theory for Beginners
Go to the music store in your area. They have books that show you where to put your fingers to play notes and what notes look like. I taught myself quickly like this. I’m 13 and I did it when I was ten so they have pretty easy ones with different songs.

First off, theres no such thing as “Bad Practice”. So just play tabs, and do stuff like that. The best way to strengthen your fingers is just to play, and play….and play.

What they said is decent advice, but long term I think you’re hurting yourself by not learning to read music (I know because I played guitar 8 years before I bothered learning to read music and it’s amazing how quickly I could advance after I finally got that down)
Check out the site below, they say you can learn how to read music in like a week!
