It would take an extreme amount of concentration to learn it from a book, but I guess it is possible.

They do have beginner books that teach you notes, chords and ect. you might try asking at your local music store.

It is not that hard just pick up a book on classical guitar by Fredrick M Noad He will set you straight.
(Note: While his stuff is good it is also boring so be prepared.)

ok.. do you NEED a music teacher to help you with this? NO. Would it make it EASIER? Yes. YOu have to have:
1. The Aptitude
2. The Attitude
Aptitude to pick it up IF YOU do it by yourself. ATitude in terms of desire to do it.
Sure it can be done.

Certain DVD courses can help u without needing to pay a teacher. lists a few and rates them, and many other sites review courses as well
